The Flower of the Holy Night is based on the Mexican legend of the poinsettia and can be used as a starting point for learning about the Christmas traditions and customs of other countries and cultures.

Benito?s big sister Paloma, and little brother José, have already decided what they will take to the crib when the family go to church on Christmas Eve. But Benito cannot think of anything he can give until his uncle teaches him how to carve wooden animals. He practises until he has made something good enough to give Jesus.

Paloma has made a blanket and José has painted a picture, but as they leave for church, José trips over and the picture is torn; he is inconsolable. Benito loves his little brother very much and decides to let him take the carving that he has worked so hard on. When the family go into church Benito waits outside ? after all, he has nothing to give.
