Customer Reviews
How does one review a book that has been valued, and is still available after centuries? I will only say that if you are committed to a spiritual journey where your wish is to become closer to Christ then this is the book for you.
It is short [100 pages], and is a collection of conversations and letters about a daily practice that God brought to "perfection" in the life of Brother Lawrence of the Resurrection" a lay Carmelite. Each conversation / letter is only two or so pages in length. It can seem repetitive at times though I found this beneficial, because it allows his gentle compassion and desire to bring others to this simple practice to become very clear. The people to whom he was writing become familiar, and we are drawn into their stories.
It is a joy to read because his radiant love for God comes forth, and melt its way into the readers heart. He repeatedly says the practice is difficult .... probably because the simplest things can be difficult, and he recognises this. It is very ... very ... easy to understand, and nobody will have a problem getting started and indeed making some progress.
The challenge is integrating it into our lives, but it is so rewarding that you can only be delighted to re-find it if you drop it for a short time. This practice is good for us.
Finally I would say to try to get this edition [Foreword Henri Nouwen, Edited by John J Delaney] as there are some archaic versions around that may be difficult to read.

Description
In the words of this humble seventeenth-century lay Carmelite, "we must trust God once and for all and abandon ourselves to Him alone." This difficult task necessarily requires perseverance and continual conversation with God in all activities great and small: "speaking humbly and talking lovingly with Him at all times, at every moment, without rule or system..." In reading these conversations, letters, and spiritual maxims, we learn the key to endless joy.
In short, this little spiritual classic -- in its fresh, contemporary English translation -- renders the simple wisdom of Brother Lawrence accessible to every Christian who yearns for the fullness of life.
