Description

This is a comprehensive account of Irish PEN from its establishment in 1934 to 2019. It describes some of the monthly meetings with lectures, panel discussions, readings or talks. It records the centre's annual dinner and presentation of the Irish PEN/A.T. Cross Award for literature. It also records the Centre's representation at PEN International Congresses hosted by the Centre in 1953 and 1971.

The aim of PEN is to promote the craft of writing, freedom of thought and of expression, goodwill among writers worldwide and an active concern for imprisoned writers. These are the most significant themes in this monograph. In addition, the author recalls his social interaction with well-known literary and non-literary characters and his vignettes on some of them will bring a smile of recognition to the faces of many readers.
