Cardinal Cahal B. Daly (1917–2009) was a theological and spiritual giant, best known for his tireless dedication to the work of peace in Northern Ireland. His homilies, addresses and other published works during a challenging period in Ireland offered profound theses on peace and violence, rich theological reflections and compelling insights into moral issues.
In A New Ireland Gemma Loughran has curated a selection of Cardinal Daly’s writings, highlighting the range of themes that dominated his moral leadership, from the pursuit of peace and reconciliation to the universal call to love, the crucial role of Catholic education and the imperative of social justice. Cardinal Daly’s astute insight, prophetic words and legacy remain an inspiration, even a quarter of a century after the Good Friday Agreement.
About the Editor:
Gemma Loughran studied scholastic philosophy at Queen’s University when Cahal Daly was a reader in that discipline. She lectured in religious studies at St Mary’s University College Belfast for many years before becoming a barrister and then a county court judge in Northern Ireland.
