Candlemas

Candlemas follow’s Saint Brigid’s Day and a common legend is that Saint Brigid promised to help Mary when Mary was bringing the baby Jesus to the crowded Temple. Saint Brigid did so by wearing a headdress bearing lighted candles, Mary decreed Candlemas to follow Saint Brigid’s day to honor this act. 

In Ireland people often bring candles to Church to have them blessed to be used on special occasions such as Mass or when sacraments were administered to the sick.
