Clare of Assisi

Clare of Assisi

1193 - 1253

FEAST AUGUST 11

Clare was drawn to Francis of Assis radical message of serving God in poverty. Despite objections from her aristocratic family, who wanted her to marry, she gave up her wealth and lifestyle and with Francis' help she founded the Second Order of St. Francis, known worldwide as the Poor Clares. For 40 years, she guided the San Damiano community, whose nuns included her sister and widowed mother.

She lived the simple, literal gospel life as Francis taught her; she was courageous and had a passion for poverty and humility; an ardent life of prayer; and a generous concern for her sisters.
