|The Year of Faith commences on October 11. When Pope Benedict XVI declared a Year of Faith to commence on that date, he was conscious that it was the anniversary of two very important events in the Church’s history: the fiftieth anniversary of the Second Vatican Council, which commenced on 11 October 1962; and the publication of the Catechism of the Catholic Church on 11 October 1992.
The Year of Faith is a time for us to renew our commitment to our faith, God’s gift to us at our Baptism. Our faith grows through our relationship with Jesus Christ, sent by God to embody for us God’s presence in our world. Jesus showed us how to live a life of faith and called us to do the same. On the night before he died, he said, ‘Just as I have loved you, you also should love one another’. On the same night he also promised us the gift of the Holy Spirit to enable us to live and love as he asked us to: ‘The Advocate, the Holy Spirit whom the Father will send in my name will teach you everything, and remind you of all that I have said.’
As we move through the year, we will be making available on these webpages a number of resources which we hope will help you to reflect on and deepen your own faith: resources that will help you to pray, inspiring stories of people who have lived a life of faith, as well as filmed interviews which will give examples of what you might specifically do to put your faith in action this year. All of these resources will endeavour to help you to come to a deeper understanding of some aspects of the Church’s teaching.
Veritas’ initiative to support the Year of Faith by providing this website and its associated resources is part of our response to the Church’s call to the ‘New Evanglisation’. This call is reiterated in the Irish context in Share the Good News, the National Directory for Catechesis in Ireland. Share the Good News is a ten year plan for Evangelisation, for Catechesis and for Religious Education from the perspective of the Irish Catholic Church. It reminds us that the new evangelisation is ‘…addressed to those who have already been initiated into the Church but who have lost their deep sense of commitment to Jesus Christ and connection with the Christian community.’ (n. 40)
