  • What does it mean to live in the presence of God? Combining story with spiritual reflection, poems and prayers, Walking the Edges invites us to journey to the borderlands, the place inhabited by Christians willing to extend themselves in adventurous living for the sake of love. Here, on the edges of the unknown, God the great Other is ever to be found. Each time we open our eyes to beauty, to wonder, to mystery, our lives are renewed. Every time we fail to reach out beyond the solid and the comfortable, we kill the life that is in us. Though the outcome of various events in our lives may be unknown, God continually calls us from death to life, promising an abiding presence and a glorious future. Walking the Edges draws on the stories of St Martin, St Ninian, St Patrick, St Oswald and St Cuthbert. It also offers an insight into David Adams childhood, his early life as a coal miner, and his unexpected call to the pastoral ministry which has been a blessing to so many around the world.

"This is Gods earth and he is to be found in it: we need to set out with joy to cross the boundaries that have prevented us from seeing and knowing the presence and power of God. God is with us and waiting for us to come to him; his kingdom is near and waiting for us to enjoy it."

  • David Adam

David Adam is one of the best-loved figures in Celtic Spirituality. He also writes poetry and teaching material for churches. Living on Holy Island for thirteen years he has a special love for the saints of Iona and Lindisfarne. He now lives on land that was once given to St Cuthbert.

A good few of David’s poems and prayers have been turned into songs or hymns and they appear on CDs. He has broadcast on TV and radio on many occasions, talking on Celtic saints and their way of life. He is interested in Northumbrian folk tales and with a folk singer relates these to various audiences. He is a keen bird-watcher and loves walking in the hills.

David wants people to learn to stop for a while and to wonder at the mystery of the whole of creation and the marvel of their own being. ‘Too many people see the world as a problem to be solved rather than a mystery to be enjoyed.’

He has a great interest in liturgy and believes it should be deepened by teaching people to meditate on the simplest yet most profound of statements such as: ‘The Lord is here’.
