  • To Love and Cherish is born out of the authors experience of working with couples as they prepare their wedding liturgy. It caters for the needs of all couples, offering a wide choice of readings, prayers, blessings, contemporary reflections and forms of exchanging vows. It provides two model wedding liturgies, one in the context of the Eucharist and one without mass, as well as a newly created ceremony for inter-faith marriages.

As someone who spend eight years working in a voluntary organisation (AIM Group) in the seventies helping and supporting people the majority were women- whose marriages had broken up or were breaking up, I welcome any book whose purpose it is to help couples prepare for their marriage in a thoughtful, loving and prayerful way. The author in his Introduction says, More and more couples whom I accompany in preparation for their marriage say that the most important part of their wedding day is what happens in the church. And so he offers a choice of readings, prayers, reflections, forms of exchanging the marriage vows, blessing of the rings, prayers of the faithful, marriage prefaces and nuptial blessings. He goes on to say that for most people, being involved in planning a significant liturgy is a whole new experience ... The meaningfulness or otherwise of the marriage ceremony can be determinative of the future relationship they will have with the faith community into which they were initiated as children . Because marriage is the most exciting time in one s life, the marriage ceremony and its importance could be unwittingly moved to the background by the pressure of other events associated with the marriage. Indeed it is hard to concentrate on the Service and the importance of the Liturgy on the Wedding Day so it is an excellent idea that those involved can readings, etc., which mean the most to them. The beautiful words from St Paul s Letter to the Corinthians, Love is patient; love is kind; love is not envious or boastful or arrogant or rude ... will leave a greater impression on the young couple during the wedding ceremony if they have read those words in the silence of their togetherness and pondered on them in the days before the wedding. Other words like As long as we love one another /God will live in us / And his love will be complete in us will stay in the memory given the same preparation. There is a wealth of help and advice in the twen

Oliver Brennan is a very experienced pastor and teacher. He uses these gifts to great purpose in this excellent book. He writes For most people, being involved in planning a significant liturgy is a whole new experience, and The marriage liturgy is one of the most important religious experiences for people during their married lives. This book takes this into account and is very user friendly, instructional, sensitive in its teaching and practical in its layout.

It is the first book that I have seen which outlines the celebration of sacramental marriage both within the celebration of the Eucharist and outside this sacrament. Its clear, easy to follow and shows how to draw the ceremony together.

Finally, the section which outlines all the choices is laid out well, is easy to read and simple to follow. A huge advantage in this book also is the inclusion of appropriate scripture readings. For me however the use of text from the New Revised Standard Version of the Bible doesnt always help, as sometimes this particular translation doesnt always read or sound well.
