  • Bernadette Flanagan PhD is a Presentation sister who has been working and living in Dublin, the place of her research, since 1987. The Spirit of the City is the fruit of her time spent with young people out of home, adults taking up second-chance education, Christian renewal groups and inner-city dwellers. She is currently director of graduate studies in Spirituality at the Milltown Institute, Dublin. This book has two main values. Firstly it makes a highly original contribution to developing a method for researching urban spirituality (Bernadette will present this method in much more detail in her second book - Approaches to Contemporary Spirituality, Veritas, Nov 2000). Secondly its findings are a fruitful source of reflection for all who minister in a modern city in any part of the world. This book resulted from Bernadettes doctoral thesis and is grounded in meticulous research with the residents of a rapidly changing inner city, namely Dublin. It is exciting and origninal and, in terms of contemporary spirituality, a rare piece of work. It will be of interest to those who are seeking to understand contemporary socio-spiritual and socio-cultural issues. Those involved in the sociology of religion and urban antrhopology will also find it enlightening. It is a real treat and delight to read because it allows the voices of real men and women to see the light of day. From it we can see that spiriutality grows in real places where real people face the real issues of daily living. The book is in two parts. In the first part she outlines what she understands by spirituality and the frameworks she is using to understand the conversations she conducts about spiriuality wiht inner city dwellers. She also present the histroy of the Liberties, the historic area of Dublins inner city where she conducted her research, and its socio-cultural profile. In Part Two she lets the people of the city speak for themselves and concludes with a reflective, incisive and challenging analysis of their conversations. For anybody interested in understanding the real spiritual issues of people today this is an invaluable resource.
