Gustave Dory, through his illustrations, through line and color, through the beauty of art, through the work of the Spirit in him; offers us a dimension of absorption of this awesome mystery. For art, all art is but a witness of an experience of the beyond which offers us the possibility to touch reality beyond our limitations and static conceptions.
Therefore the aim of these pages and of this book is, to read, to hear and to encounter the Lord Jesus Christ in our midst. To read a page of the Holy Bible at each dawn and at each sunset is to beautify our eyes with a heavenly vision. These illustrations are but a furrow of light of the beauty of the Incarnation.
Gustave Dory realized hundreds of copper engravings about the life of Jesus from the Gospel as well as other themes from the New Testament. While trying to choose the appropriate texts to each of the illustrations in this volume, I was taken by amazement and wonder at how an artist, such as Done, must have read the Book and encountered the person of Jesus.
To be given the privilege by the editors to write the foreword to the present edition is but an occasion to witness, from the Holy Land, about the Lord Jesus Christ, the Son of God the Father, who, by taking on our nature, assured us that:
‘I came that they may have life and have it abundantly’
