"Jesus introduces us to these works of mercy in his preaching so that we can know whether or not we are living as his disciples."
- Pope Francis
Jesus asks us to follow him by identifying with and showing compassion to people most in need. It is a holy calling. Pope Francis has said, "The preaching of Jesus is made visible once more in the response of faith which Christians are called to offer by their witness." The Corporal and Spiritual Works of Mercy outlines the roots of mercy as presented in Scripture, and then delves deeply into each of the corporal and spiritual works, enlivening our commitment to our common humanity.
The Corporal and Spiritual Works of Mercy is one of a series of eight books, the official catechetical resource for the jubilee of Mercy, created by the Pontifical Council for the Promotion of the New Evangelization at the request of Pope Francis.
As Pope Francis says, we are, as a Church, called to "echo the word of God that resounds strong and clear as a message and a sign of pardon, strength, aid, and love." These books are a guiding light for individuals and parishes to answer that call.
