The late Fintan O'Carroll was one of the leading religious composers of his day. It will be recalled that his Mass of the Immaculate Conception composed in 1975, as a highlight of the visit by Pope John Paul II to Limerick city in 1979. The composer died in 1981, but his gifted musician son, the former organist at Waterford cathedral, has adapted the original versions of his father's masses to accord with the third edition of the Roman Missal. Thus he has assured, hopefully, a long continuing life for his father's works in the liturgical life of his country. The CD contains some six masses. But hearing them even in this excellently produced format will not be the same experience for those who love them as hearing them in the settings for which the composer intended them. These publications will encourage that.
