  • This book brings together a collection of scholarly and pastoral essays on liturgy from twenty leading scholars, both lay and clerical. The essays deal with contemporary issues, many of which are rooted in an Irish pastoral context. With a foreword from Archbishop Diarmuid Martin, this volume includes contributions from such noted academics as Paul F. Bradshaw, Professor of Liturgy at the University of Notre Dame; Patrick Hannon, former Chairman of the Irish Commission for Justice and Peace; and Michael Mullins, former Director of Studies at the Pontifical Irish College in Rome.

Serving Liturgical Renewal is written in honour of Patrick Jones, who recently retired as Director of the National Centre for Liturgy and as Liturgy Secretary to the Irish Episcopal Conference. His contribution to liturgical renewal over the past fifty years has had a huge influence on many people at parish level, on clergy and bishops, as well as on his former students. This encouraging and thought-provoking book is ideal for students of liturgy, as well as  academics, clergy and all those who have an interest in liturgical studies.

Serving Liturgical Renewal: Pastoral and Theological Questions is a remarkable collection of articles on liturgical topics honouring Fr Patrick Jones, long-time director of the National Centre for Liturgy, on his 70th birthday. While many a similar Festschrift suffers from content of varying quality and topic, this volume is blessed by well-written contributions on a variety of topics all associated with the study and promotion of Christian worship.

Readers will find historical studies, reflections on the use of scripture in worship and life, insights on worship music, cries from the heart on issues of justice, presentations on liturgical spirituality, and much more. I was especially delighted to read an annotated version of a still-timely program for liturgical formation devised by Seán Swayne, one of Fr. Jones’ predecessors as Irish Executive Secretary for Liturgy. Sister Moira Bergin’s very informative account of Paddy Jones’ work in the context of Irish Liturgical Renewal since Vatican II crowns the collection and should be the first article read. Serving Liturgical Renewal deserves a place in all theological libraries and should grace the bookshelves of all who would like a summary and examples of recent Irish liturgical scholarship.

This is an invaluable volume for theologians, liturgists and all interested in ecclesial ministry. It is at once scholarly and accessible, combining the fruits of up-to-date studies on liturgy and sacraments by a range of leading theologians, both national and international. Most of the contemporary pastoral concerns bearing on the liturgy are addressed in a rigorously researched fashion but always with the general reader in view. It is a cornucopia of liturgical and sacramental theology with a freshness and honesty that will allow it to be savoured and enjoyed for years to come. It is a fitting tribute to a liturgist who has given so professionally and generously to the Church in Ireland over many decades.

     – Eugene Duffy

Lecturer in Systematic Theology and Author

(Mary Immaculate College, University of Limerick)

Patrick Jones devoted himself to the demand of Vatican II “to impart an increasing vigour to the Christian life of the faithful” (SC 1), serving liturgical renewal, for most of his life, as a scholar, leader and pastor. This collection of essays highlight the importance of ongoing renewal and reform, and its wide spectrum of topics and ecumenical scope make this volume inspiring reading for all those interested in the renewal of Christian worship.
