  • Prophets is the fifth volume of the full-color reproduction books of "The Saint Johns Bible", featuring some of the most beautiful passages in all of Sacred Scripture.

The ancient prophets of Israel suffered and celebrated with the people they both admonished and praised. They provided words of consolation during times of oppression and kept the flame of hope alive during the darkest periods of Israelite and Jewish history. Christians honor the prophets as those who foretold the coming of the Messiah, Jesus Christ, as is evidenced by the many references to the prophets in the New Testament. The prophetic message is as relevant today as it was in ancient Israel.

The prophets continue to call us to respond to Gods love and offer their unvarnished judgment on our behavior. Jacksons images amplify the prophetic word, keeping the flame of hope alive today. "Prophets" includes artistic depictions from Isaiah, Ezekiel, Jeremiah, Micah, Amos, Daniel, and Zechariah. Major images are Isaiahs "Temple Vision" and "Suffering Servant", Ezekiels "Call" and the "Valley of the Dry Bones", Daniels "Son of Man", Amos "Plea for Social Justice", and Zechariahs "Messianic Prediction".
In addition, famous passages such as "Isaiah 2:4". "He shall judge between the nations, and shall arbitrate for many peoples; they shall beat their swords into plowshares, and their spears into pruning hooks; nation shall not lift up sword against nation, neither shall they learn war any more" receive special calligraphic and artistic treatment.

Donald Jackson, a world renowned calligrapher and illuminator, in collaboration with artists and theologians, has woven together word and image in this once-in-a-millennium project. Significant in both size and scope, The Saint Johns Bible will be bound in seven magnificent volumes comprising nearly 1,100 pages, measuring 15 7/8 inches wide x 24 1/2 inches tall. The translation of the Saint Johns Bible is the New Revised Standard Version (NRSV). It was chosen because it is theologically sound, and has the distinction of being officially authorized for use by major Christian churches.

Commissioned by the monks of Saint Johns Abbey and University as a Bible for our time, The Saint Johns Bible is a unique blend of ancient methods, materials and tools with modern themes, images, technology and text. Whether you have a deep reverence for Scripture, are drawn to the precise work of the quill, are an avid art collector, or are fascinated by the making of The Saint Johns Bible, you now have the opportunity to take home the experience of this project through full-color, page-by-page reproduction books.

    - His Holiness Pope Benedict XVI

We tend to read greedily and hastily, as we do so many other things: this beautiful text shows us a better way. This project not only revives the ancient tradition of the church sponsoring creative arts, it also offers an insight into that lost skill of patient and prayerful reading.

    - The Archbishop of Canterbury, The Most Reverend Rowan Williams

The glow of brilliant colour and the striking if not startling inter-textual designing gracing another volume of The Saint Johns Bible provide ample justification for this joint project of St. Johns Abbey and Saint Johns University.
