Gathered in my Name is published for the year of Matthew (Year A) in the lectionary, to promote understanding of the Gospel and be an aid to prayer (includes Notes for prayer groups and Notes for further study). Matthew has always been the Church's favourite Gospel, and is most relevant in these times when the Church is under such severe scrutiny. Matthew has much to contribute to the rethinking of the Church to make it a better witness to Jesus.
This book was written during the time of the resignation of Pope Benedict and the election and early months of Pope Francis, a`Matthew' man who understands that Jesus' teaching does not easily `take' with those who have not experienced Jesus' love and compassion. "Go and learn what this means, `I prefer compassion to sacrifice... (9:13).
Albert McNally is a retired priest of Down and Connor. He studied scripture at the Pontifical Biblical Institute in Rome 1968-71, and has spent 30 years teaching at second and third level and 17 years in parish work.
