  • Catholic teaching on the roles of men and women.

In recent times, much reflection has been given to the question of the dignity of women and to womens rights and duties. This document from the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith clarifies some of the essential elements of a correct understanding of active collaboration, which recognises the difference between men and women in the Church and in the world.

It deals in particular with two distortions which have entered current thought on womens issues: that men and women are struggling in opposition to each other rather than in collaboration and that differences between the sexes are viewed as mere effects of historical and cultural conditioning rather than inherent to their complementarity.

Above all, the fact that human beings are persons needs to be underscored: Man is a person, man and woman equally so, since both were created in the image and likeness of the personal God.
