"He does not extend his mercy to them because they know him, but that they may know him."
- Saint Augustine
The Fathers of the Church, our first pastors and teachers, knew that they needed God's mercy and forgiveness. Pope Francis believes that we can learn to be more merciful through their experience of mercy. Mercy in the Fathers of the Church includes an in-depth look at St. Augustine, the Preacher of Mercy, and an anthology of passages from Church Fathers including St. Maximus, St. Cyril, St. John Chrysostom, St. Ambrose, St. Basil, St. Polycarp, St. Ignatius of Antioch, and many more.
The Mercy in the Fathers of the Church is one of a series of eight books, the official catechetical resource for the jubilee of Mercy, created by the Pontifical Council for the Promotion of the New Evangelization at the request of Pope Francis.
As Pope Francis says, we are, as a Church, called to "echo the word of God that resounds strong and clear as a message and a sign of pardon, strength, aid, and love." These books are a guiding light for individuals and parishes to answer that call.
Jubilee Year of Mercy: December 2015 November 2016.
