  • Background to "Introduction by Fr. Slavko Barbaric O.F.M."

When working with Fr. Slavko over 16 years, I would often arrive in Medjugorje with pilgrims, and request some help from him, regarding spreading the Messages. He spoke in 18 venues in Ireland and we were well used to working with him. He would always say "yes" to the request, and then ask when the "dead line" would be. I always thought he would forget he was so extraordinarily busy, but 48 hours before going home he would always have the work requested done.

On the Feast of the Assumption, 15th August 1986, forty eight hours before I left Medjugorje, I spotted Fr. Slavko going up the steps of the Presbytery at 10pm. He had unusually long days, climbing Krizevac (1600 ft.) every morning, before 7.30a.m. Holy Mass. That day he had then hosted thousands of pilgrims, leading them in prayer throughout the day. He must have been exhausted. Nevertheless, I took the courage to run over to the steps and enquired had he managed to do the preface for our book of Messages which I had requested on arrival. He was at the top of the steps. "I will do it right now", he answered, I said "I dont mean right now, you must be exhausted?" He ran down the steps and came over to me and said," but what about you, are you not also exhausted?" That was Fr. Slavko. He was always thinking of others.

Fr. Slavko was well known to take just a few hours to sleep at night. He worked for Our Lady tirelessly and selflessly. That night he wrote the following text, and gave it to me the next day. Typical Fr. Slavko!!
