Joyful Christianity explores the events before, during and soon after Jesus' birth, as experienced by those caught up in these world-changing events, and relates them to life and faith today.
Cally Hammond invites the reader to experience afresh the nativity as portrayed in the Gospel of Luke: the annunciation, the visitation, the birth of Jesus, the presentation in the Temple and the finding in the Temple. In doing this, she leads you to discover new depths of meaning in the biblical story, to develop a deeper commitment to your faith and to meet the challenges of life with joyful Christianity.
The Revd Dr Cally Hammond is the Dean of Gonville and Caius College, Cambridge. She began her academic career as a classicist, first at Oxford and then at Cambridge, where her research on the Roman historians taught her the value of stories and narratives as a way of communicating truths and beliefs. This has stood her in good stead when thinking about the Gospels and the early Church. As well as working in academic life in Oxford and Cambridge, she spent seven years in full-time ministry in rural parishes in the diocese of Ely. She is the author of Passionate Christianity: A Journey to the Cross.
This is a devotional book which is enriched both by Cally Hammonds theological grip and verve and by her engaging honesty about her own spiritual journey. Her considerable scholorship is worn lightly and the writing is hightly accessible - a rich feast for anyone hoping to deepen their appreciation of the joyful heart of Christian faith.
