Chapter 30. The Sixth Commandment: Marital Fidelity
You Shall Not Commit Adultery
(CCC, nos 2331–2400)
The Sixth Commandment calls spouses to permanent and exclusive fidelity to one another, a countercultural value in contemporary society. Fidelity in marriage flows from the sacramental graces of the covenant of marriage. As spouses vow to be faithful to one another forever, their words are a powerful image and witness to the covenant God made with humanity. Adultery undermines the dignity and purpose of Christian marriage and weakens individuals and the institution of the family.
