  • The book Games We Play is about the history of childrens games. At our school, there are children from many different backgrounds, We all love playing games, so we decided to learn about the different games we play and where the games come from. Not only is learning about games a lot of fun, it is also a great way to learn about the other cultures in our school community.

Some childrens games have been played for centuries. Swings existed on the island of Crete in 1600 BC and jacks (knucklebones) a game that involves tossing and then catching five or more jackstones, was played in ancient Greece. Both blindmans budd and a chase games, in which one teach chases another team depending on the toss of a coin or disk, date from 2 000 years ago.

Many games are remnants of ancient religious or mystic rituals. Hopscotch is related to myths of labyrinths and later came to symbolise the souls journey from Earth to heaven. Another ritual involved batting an object into the air as many times as possible without letting it to the ground. This was said to determine the length of ones life.
