  • For the first time in over sixty years, the Congregation of Holy Cross has produced a new prayer book designed to serve the spiritual needs of both the priests and brothers of the Congregation and the thousands of Catholics who are the recipients of the education and ministry of Holy Cross parishes and schools.

The Congregation of Holy Cross presents its new Directory of Devotional Prayer, a handsomely produced pocket-size treasury of everyday prayers, popular devotions, and reflections. Printed in two colors and durably bound, this elegantly designed prayer book showcases the spiritual heritage of Holy Cross: Eucharistic devotion, daily meditation, the examination of conscience, the Way of the Cross, the rosary, litanies, and devotion to the principal patrons of the Congregation—Saint Joseph, Our Lady of Sorrows, and the Sacred Heart of Jesus.

The Directory also celebrates the fundamental and distinctive elements of the Holy Cross charism: conformity to Christ, trust in Divine Providence, and hope in the Cross.

  • Congregation of Holy Cross

The Congregation of Holy Cross is a religious order of priests and brothers that was founded in 1837 by Blessed Basil Anthony Moreau (1799–1873) in the small French town of Sainte-Croix (Holy Cross). This group of brothers and priests served a variety of needs as the Church was rebuilt following the French Revolution. Within a few years, the missionary spirit of their founder, who was beatified in 2007, and the zeal of these men to make God known, loved, and served prompted them to go far beyond the borders of France. Today members of Holy Cross live and work in sixteen countries on five continents. In the United States, Holy Cross missionaries founded—and continue to serve—many schools, including the University of Notre Dame and the University of Portland.

Many generations of Holy Cross religious used a special book of prayers, some each day and others on special occasions. I am pleased that Ave Maria Press is making this important book available to members of the general public. I hope that they, along with our Holy Cross religious, will discover prayers that may assist them in the development of their own spiritual lives.

     - Rev. Richard V. Warner, C.S.C., Superior General, Congregation of Holy Cross

It is a pleasure for us in Holy Cross to share with all the faithful this rich treasury of our devotions and prayers. Not only do they reveal the history of Holy Cross spirituality, they allow others to join us in praying as we in Holy Cross have prayed for over 170 years. The reader will see clearly the central role of Divine Providence, the Eucharist, and the Cross as our Hope, that are so deeply rooted in our spirituality. We invite all who possess the Holy Cross Directory of Devotional Prayer to join us in praying the same prayers that were prayed by all those in Holy Cross in whose footsteps we follow, including St. Andre Bessette, C.S.C., our first Holy Cross saint.

     - Rev. David Tyson, C.S.C., Provincial Superior, United States Province of Priests and Brothers

I recommend this book to all who know Holy Cross so that they can share in our spiritual heritage and be companions with us in our journey to holiness.

     - Br. Thomas A. Dziekan, C.S.C., Vicar General, Congregation of Holy Cross

With this Directory of Devotional Prayer, the Holy Cross priests and brothers continue their great tradition of inviting lay men and women to unite with them and with the Church in prayer. These devotional prayers, suited for all different moments of our walks with the Lord, can help any follower of Christ to ‘pray unceasingly.’

     - Rev. Andrew Gawrych, C.S.C., Coeditor of The Cross, Our Only Hope

To receive a book like this is to be given a precious gift, a way to say the unsayable from the mouths of spiritual greats, past and present. To give a book like this is to invite a blessing that offers the receiver to go within, meet God, and let holy words form and transform a wounded heart. This is benefaction of the highest order, especially for those of us who are a part of the Holy Cross family. This little book is devotion with Mary at the foot of the cross for our times.

     - Rev. Daniel Issing, C.S.C., Assistant Professor of Theology, Kings College

This is a very practical and inspirational resource! It can be used for ones own personal prayer life or for leading others in liturgical services, meetings, or on retreats. It also provides a beautiful connection to the life and mission of the Congregation of Holy Cross.
