From biblical scholar John Bergsma—two-time Teacher of the Year at the Franciscan University of Steubenville—comes Bible Basics for Catholics, a fresh, fun, and authentically Catholic introduction to the “big picture” of salvation history.
This overview of the Bible is based on Bergsma’s wildly popular introduction to theology course at Franciscan University, where he is a colleague of popular author Scott Hahn. Using the skills that have made him a great teacher, Bergsma combines sound theology, academic expertise, pastoral wisdom, and an endearing playfulness to draw readers into the connection between the great stories of the Bible and salvation in Jesus. Central to the book’s themes are Bergsma’s signature illustrations of key biblical characters, which are simple, yet surprisingly profound and help readers understand complex biblical ideas.
Those looking for a deeper understanding of the Old Testament and its great figures will find this book to be an easily accessible and enlightening resource. Even those who are well-versed in the stories of the Bible will find Bergsma's approach to salvation history to be an attractive new look at old stories.
John Bergsma is an associate professor of theology at the Franciscan University of Steubenville and a senior fellow at the St. Paul Center for Biblical Theology. Twice voted Faculty of the Year by graduating classes at Franciscan University, Bergsma is a popular teacher whose love of scripture inspires his students.
He holds master of divinity and master of theology degrees from Calvin Seminary and served as a Protestant pastor for four years before entering the Catholic Church. Bergsma became Catholic in 2001 while working on his doctorate in theology at the University of Notre Dame. He specialized in Old Testament and the Dead Sea Scrolls, graduating with high honors in 2004. Bergsma’s articles, some coauthored with Scott Hahn, have appeared in several academic journals and in Lay Witness. He has appeared as a guest on EWTN’s The Journey Home, Franciscan University Presents, and Relevant Radio’s Drew Mariani Show. He and his wife Dawn live with their seven children in Steubenville, Ohio.
"Even though this is a basic, non-intimidating overview of the Bible, the author is not afraid to deepen our appreciation of Scripture by occasionally introducing some important technical terms and Hebrew and Greek words, always explaining them thoroughly and understandably."
