  • Teachers of Catholic children, whether in school or in CCD programs, face the challenge of introducing their students to prayer.

Experts on prayer have told us for centuries that a most effective beginning prayer is that which engages not only ones faith, but also ones mind and imagination, ones heart and feelings, ones curiosity and creativity.
A Journey with Jesus provides a vehicle for children to take the roles of the characters that witnessed Jesus Way of the Cross. Written fn a language that children can easily grasp, this version of a traditional devotion invites students to put themselves creatively in the scene on that first Good Friday in Jerusalem. Students who portray the various roles, as well as their classmates who listen and respond, become part of the Paschal Mystery in a memorable way.

In this work Fr. James Allen, O.M.L, director of the Oblate preaching team in Bellevflle, Illinois, has adapted Journey of Decision, the popular Stations of the Cross written by Fr. Robert D. Eimer, O.M.L, and Sr. Sarah A. OMalley, O.S.B. (The Liturgical Press, 1991).

Adapted from Journey of Decision, a Way of the Cross for adults, this childrens Way engages children by having them actively participate. Fourteen readers represent characters from the passion of Jesus. Suggestions are given at the outset for props or symbolic costumes that achieve a two-fold purpose: they draw children into the story, thus helping them follow along.

As in the original Journey on which this childrens adaptation is based, the text combines the traditional with the innovative. It asks children to journey with Jesus not just during this Way of the Cross but during every day of their lives.
